The construction began in 1174, but the work stopped after completion of the second story when it started to sink. Various lengths and weights of columns were used to counter balance the slanting, and the project was finally completed in 1304. It is 190 feet high, and it leans 5 degrees.

The construction began in 1063, and was consecrated in 1118. The work was fully completed in the 13th century with the erection of the facade. It was designed in Latin-Cruciform, with a Romanesque style.
