The project to link Lake Ontario with Lake Simcoe began in 1904, but cancelled in 1916, without the canal ever put into use. There was not enough water.

Thomas Foster built this temple between 1935-36 as a memorial to his wife and daughter. It was inspired by the Taj Mahal in India. The Byzantine-style temple has a copper dome of 18 metre high.
