The museum used to be the old Lei Yue Mun Fort. To resist attacks from the pirates and foreign forces, many forts were established during the Ming and the Qing Dynasties. This practice continued even after Hong Kong was occupied by the British forces after the Opium War.
博物館原是鯉魚門炮台舊址。因為要抵禦外侮及海盜，明、清兩朝都興建了很多炮台。鴉片戰爭後英國佔領香港，但這習慣仍然繼續。

It was built in 1846 and until 1932 was used as the residence of the Commander of the British Forces in HK. Now house the Museum of Tea Wares, inside the Hong Kong Park. It is the oldest existing Western building in Hong Kong, and was originally known as Headquarters House.
