Construction began in 926 as the court church of the Premyslid princes. The Gothic construction began in the 14th century under Mathias of Arras and Peter Parler of Gmuend, and the Baroque and Neo-Gothic additions in the 18th and the 19th centuries. The 1370 mosaic The Last Judgment can be seen above the arch of the Golden Portal entrance from the third courtyard.
