The society was founded by Sir John Colborne, the then lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, in 1834. The Horticultural Gardens were opened on September 11, 1860 by the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) on a five-acre piece of land donated by George W. Allan. The park was re-named Allan Gardens in 1901.
