Built completely of timber in 1056 during the Liao Dynasty, it is 67.31 metres tall with steeple of 10 metres high. It is the only large wooden pagoda in China, and the tallest amoung the ancient wooden buildings in the world. There are five levels from the exterior, but 9 levels in the interior. The interesting fact is that the pagoda has withstood years of natural disasters and still remained standing, so it has been the focus of intense study by present days scientists.
