Constructed at a cost of 1.1 billion dollars, the new parliament building was opened on May 9, 1988 by Queen Elizabeth II. In the forecourt is the Aboriginal mosaic depicting the meeting place, and the red walkway depicts the prominent colour of the Australian landscape. The flagpole is 81-metre tall, and the flag measures 12.8 by 6.4 metres, roughly the side of a doubl decker bus.
