Huka Falls are the largest falls on the Waikato River. Waikato River is one of the longest rivers in New Zealand, and it drains Lake Taupo which is the largest fresh water lake in all of Australasia. The Waikato River narrows to 20 metres from 100 metres, and drops 20 metres, at this point, and 250,000 cubic metres of water per second squeeze through this narrow gorge to form Huka Falls. The blue colour is the result of very clear water reflecting blue light.
