Large swell, generated by an Atlantic storm, break on the volcanic cliffs near La Hoya, Lanzarote. The cliffs here are over 30 feet (10 m) high. Unfortunately, there were no willing onlookers at this stage to provide a sense of scale but hopefully the volcanic peak in the background puts things into perspective. Note the emerging rainbow by the spray.

Taken on a family holiday to the Amalfi region of Italy, this is the view down to the Mediterranean from the summit of Monte Solaro on the island of Capri. I used a circular polariser to bring out the colours, taking care to screw it to the lens securely since the drop is 589 metres!

A long exposure (30 seconds) of an electrical storm, captured from the roof of a hotel in Sorrento, Italy. Plenty of drama in the sky, illuminated by lightning behind the clouds – one bolt can be seen in the top left of the image. I spent a lot of time processing the file which I worked on in TIF format – specifically, reducing noise, fixing hot pixels and cloning stray light trails. I was quite pleased with the result and the clarity of the image, despite difficult (and quite scary) conditions. The only significant blur seems to be associated with moving boats in the harbour below. Thanks for looking.

An aerial shot of the west coast of Corsica, captured from a jet at about 30,000 feet on a flight to Malta in March. Often images taken through an aircraft window suffer from distortion, aberration and internal reflections. In this case I minimised these artefacts by shooting at a focal length of about 50 mm with the lens hard and flat against the window and by wearing a dark tee-shirt. Thanks for viewing.

We were lucky enough to witness an incredible sunset across the salt pans of Playa d’en Bossa while in Ibiza last week. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a tripod with me and had to shoot at ISO 400 with the aperture wide open. Nonetheless, after some noise reduction and a little sharpening, I was quite pleased with this effort. Because of the rapidly changing clouds and light in the sky I have various images to upload from this sojourn. Thanks for viewing.
