Wildflowers in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
The desert received a decent amount of rain (for a desert) this year and now there are awesome displays of wildflowers.

Sycamore Canyon Test Facility is rocket and weapons test site located east of MCAS Miramar in northern San Diego, California. A number of weapons contractors have had facilities at this site including Lockheed-Martin, Hughes Aircraft and General Dynamics. The engines for the Atlas missile and Centaur rocket stage were tested at this site.

This fire has burned 197,990 acres and is 99 percent contained. Full containment is expected on October 31. The Witch Fire has joined the Poomacha fire in the north. Residents are being allowed re-entry into the area.
1,121 homes and 493 outbuildings have been destroyed. 76 homes and 25 outbuildings have been damaged. Additionally, 239 vehicles have been destroyed.
1,766 firefighters are assigned to this incident under unified command. There have been 40 injuries to firefighters, and two civilian fatalities reported. The estimated cost of this fire to date is $15 million.

Once a hot real estate market in the 1950's and 1960's, property surrounding the Salton Sea is now some of the cheapest real estate available in southern California.
The Salton Sea was once a popular place for boating, swimming, fishing, etc., but an increase in the salt level of the water caused large numbers of fish to die and the water became foul. This, in addition to a couple of hurricanes in the 1970's, caused the communities surrounding the sea to deteriorate.
