No water to dip my toes in. Self-portrait at an abandoned motel in Borrego Springs. Milky Way shines bright in the night sky. I don't know the name of this motel, but I've decided to name it Hotel California. This motel has been abandoned for at least 9 years now. When I first explored it back in 2012, the windows, furniture, carpet, and appliances were still intact. Also, some of the smoke alarms were beeping the low battery alert. So, it couldn't have been abandoned much long before that.

This is a single exposure shot with a Canon EOS R and Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L on May 16, 2021. The lighting effects here were done on location with a combination of LED candles and glow sticks. No Photoshop trickery. See my previous post for a behind the scenes video of how I created this shot.

Borrego Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 3,429 at the 2010 census, up from 2,535 at the 2000 census, made up of both seasonal and year-round residents. Borrego Springs is completely surrounded by Anza-Borrego State Park, the largest California State Park.

The village of Borrego Springs is recognized as a designated International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). There are no stop lights in Borrego Springs and nighttime lighting is kept to a minimum to protect the views of the night sky. Borrego Springs is approximately 90 miles (140 km) from downtown San Diego and the lights of the highly developed California coast. Borrego Springs was designated as California's first International Dark-Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. It is a center for public astronomy activities throughout the year.
