This summer's Utata Big Project is "Homage". We were given a choice of 6 photographers to homage and this is 1/4 of my Uta Barth homage.

I have based my whole project entry on the general theme of the streets of Morecambe, my home town. Perhaps not the obvious choice when it came to homaging Uta Barth and her delicate, poignant and mostly interior photography as neither the streets of Morecambe nor myself finds delicate easy to come by. I do hope I've managed to capture a little of the essence of Barth's intentions, if not always her subject matter, in these 4 photos.

This is an old shelter on the promenade that's the hangout of drinkers, drug users and an informal public urinal. The heady aromas and detritus of all 3 activities pervade the shelter, seemingly a far cry from Barth's photography. However, while I was here a smart and respectable middle-aged man was also taking photos with his phonecam. He told me he had fond memories of his sometimes sordid adventures in this the place as a youthful punk on his summer holidays. While sordid adventures, the smells of stale beer, urine and skunk aren't those immediately conjured up in my mind by Uta Barth's work, the wistful look in an ex-punkrocker's eye as he tried to recall forgotten times seemed about right for a Barth homage.

Strangely, the photos of my Uta Barth homage were all taken while looking for photos intended for a William Eggleston homage. I don't know what, if anything, that says about Barth, Eggleston or me. It was a hot, cloudless day and I stopped off for a cool drink at the Midland Hotel. I sat by the window looking over the veranda where another, perhaps more typically, Barth scene presented itself.

This is a part of the remaining frontage of Frontierland, Morecambe's one-time theme park. It closed over 10 years ago and apart from a small cowboy themed bar near the entrance, it is derelict. I used to come to the theme park as a boy and countless holiday snaps were once taken on this spot. No one except the odd afficiendo of tat and one photographer hoping to capture something of Uta Barth's photographic intention bothers to get their cameras out here today.

One of the difficulties in photographing a Brassai homage in Morecambe was the lack of people. In summer it doesn't get dark until around 10pm, add to that the necessity of of rain soaked streets and it equals no people late at night in inclement weather. I did manage to catch this one chap, a bonus for me seeing I was dry, under cover in this little ginnel.
