Horsington Drive commemorates Edward M Horsington (1878 - 1947), who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sturt from 1922 to 1947.

Former member for Sturt in the State Parliament, Mr. Edward Matthew Horsington, died at Waverley Memorial Hospital, Sydney, yesterday. He was 69. Born and educated at Maryborough, Victoria, Mr. Horsington worked on pastoral properties and, on mines in Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales before entering the State Parliament over 24 years ago. He was prominent in local union circles before Parliamentary election and was of the local branch of the F.E.D. and F.A. for some years., An extremely popular official, he took part in the civic life of the city and served as a city alderman. During nearly a quarter of a century in the State Parliament as member for Sturt, Mr. Horsington was a keen advocate of the needs of the people of the West. He never wavered in his advocacy of the Darling River Water Scheme, and at the ceremony connected with the turning of the first sod visiting Parliamentarians paid a tribute to his work. During his long term in Parliament, Mr. Horsington was only elected unopposed on one occasion.

Details of a plan for a "living memorial" in the form of a tree-lined avenue were announced at the unveiling of a memorial cairn to the late E. M. Horsington on the Drive yesterday afternoon. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony the Mayor (Ald. W. Riddiford) said the Council proposed to line Horsington Drive with red gums and jacarandas. The North Mine and Zinc Corporation had donated 180 trees from their own nurseries for the project he said. It was hoped that friends of the late Mr. Horsington and citizens, would help to plant the trees.

" Edward Horsington was a great lover of trees and look an interest in regeneration before there was any active movement in that direction. The planting of trees along this drive is something that would have given him great pleasure," he said. The Horsington Drive extends from Williams Street along the Silverton Road to the end of the regeneration area. The memorial cairn unveiled yesterday stands on the south western side of the road about half a mile from Williams Street. The stone was donated by Australian Blue Metal Co. and the plaque was cast by the Zinc Corporation.

Lovely conditions in the park this morning with a drizzly fog and no wind - perfect to test a DA*50-135 freshly serviced by the pros. It's been transformed from a fungus-filled reject to mint condition in no time. It's always a pleasure dealing with our Oz Pentax importers CR Kennedy & Co.
