It was built between 1756 and 1762. The main facade stands out for being considered the most sculptural of the city. Next to Igreja do Carmo is Igreja e Convento das Carmelitas, built between 1619 and 1628.

Igreja dos Clérigos was built between 1732 and 1750. Later on the building corresponding to the clerkship and infimary was built. Only in 1763 the tower was built.

At Praça Gomes Teixeira, known as Praça dos Leões, we can find a fountain adorned with four winged lions. It was executed in Paris and inaugurated in 1878.
