We spotted this red shouldered hawk eating a small bird in the baseball batting cage. When I started to walk towards the batting cage the hawk kept an eye on me and when I was still a good distance away flew to the top of the cage. I realized that the hawk was trapped in the cage and couldn’t get out. Don’t know how it managed to get in the batting cage and don’t know if it brought it’s kill in with it or the the small bird was already in the batting cage.
Anyway I was trying to figure out how to get this hawk out of the batting cage. As I was walking around the outside of the cage the hawk started acting strangely flying from one end to the other and hanging upside down. Luckily 2 of the town maintenance workers were driving by and I flagged them down. We lifted the netting up and were calling to the hawk to fly out but the hawk was too afraid. So one of the maintenance workers went into the cage with a grabber that he was using to pick up trash and used that to coax the hawk to fly out where we were holding up the netting and that worked the hawk flew away.
