"Padre Dam Municipal Water District built Santee Lakes to demonstrate the promise of water recycling. Should a water and wastewater agency be in the recreation business? Let’s ask that question a different way. Is it important to show cities and communities worldwide how to:
* turn wastewater into recreation?
* reduce their wastewater stream and processing costs?
* increase their local water supply, and do it all profitably, with no burden on property taxes or ratepayers?
Urban planners, architects and government officials from around the world tour Santee Lakes on a regular basis." Check out the Santee Lakes sustainability story and the rest of their interesting web site.
The lakes are small, but there are seven of them and they're big enough that the ducks and birds can easily evade humans and their cameras, if they want to. But most of the coots, mallards, and wood ducks will come to someone at the edge, with food, in a frenzy and the challenge then is to isolate one of them. If you don't have food, they will avoid you.
Of course, everyone's favorite are the introduced Wood Ducks. I find it really hard to resist shooting them, even though I have a ton of shots already and they all look pretty much the same. I still think they are beautiful, albeit a bit gaudy.
