The endangered (due to overhunting and habitat loss to agriculture and livestock) Southern Pudu (Pudu puda) is the smallest true deer. It lives in the dense lowland forests of Southern Chile and southwestern Argentina and eats fallen fruit, ferns, vines, and small tree foliage. The height at the shoulders is 14 to 15 inches (35 to 38 cm) and it weighs only 16 to 29 pounds (7.5 to 13 kg).
