As a travel photographer I have photographed in some treacherous places around the globe, especially in third world countries. Last night I found myself photographing in the East County of San Diego in the city of El Cajon.
While photographing on the street I encountered so many strange or shall I say, “unique” people. In a span of an hour I was approached by people begging for money, screaming obscenities at me and an annoying kid on rollerblades demanding I take a photo of him.
Please excuse the blur in this photograph, but I couldn’t pack up my equipment fast enough to get out of there. It was just a reminder why I don’t go to the East County very often.
Thanks guys for all your views, comments and favs!
Happy Travels! Just avoid El Cajon at night. LOL!

I am not happy with the new Flickr layout and the fact that you can’t opt out anymore. It is not so much the visual format, but more of the functionality (i.e. tags, notes, commenting).
I guess Getty saw the “signs” of decline since they ceased their partnership with Flickr last month. I am giving serious thoughts of leaving Flickr entirely and starting brand new with 500px or spending more time building my presence over at Google+ (Facebook is pissing me off too these days).
The only thing keeping me here are you guys. I have made many Flickr friendships over the years and it would be hard to break that bond. The other day I was viewing some of my older Flickr images and I noticed the contacts leaving their comments from four years ago are still following my photostream and still faithfully leaving comments. Thanks guys!
Hey Flickr do like the NSA and listen to us! Go back to the old format!
Off the soap box now…
In 2012 Forbes Magazine named North Park one of America’s Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods. I didn’t need Forbes Magazine to tell me that since I have been going to this San Diego neighborhood for years. My favorite Christian bookstore, camera shop and coffee lounge are located there or were. I have been patronizing those businesses for years, but now the Christian bookstore has closed down and I do all my camera shopping online. Fortunately the coffee lounge, Claire de Lune, is still in business.
I started a mini-project of photographing these historic neon signs around various neighborhoods in San Diego. Photographing North Park’s neon sign was a bit dangerous since I was standing in the middle of traffic in the narrow part of the island to capture this long exposure shot. Afterwards, I rewarded my bravery by heading down the street corner on the right for a nice cup of coffee at Claire de Lune.
Happy Travels!

“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” - Michael Corleone ‘The Godfather: Part III’
After my rant from my last post about how I hate the new Flickr design, I am still hanging around here in the Flickr universe. My PRO account is still paid until September so I’ll stick around to see if things change for the better.
I thought I was out, but they pulled me back in!
Continuing with my mini-project of photographing these historic neon signs around various neighborhoods in San Diego, I took this photograph Sunday night in Little Italy near downtown. The sign is a tribute to the Italian immigrants who worked in this neighborhood and in San Diego’s once thriving tuna industry.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants in San Diego, Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, is right behind me where I took this shot. I was going to head in to get a pizza pie, but as usual there was a line out the door.
Happy Travels!

I guess all these people are in a hurry to get their Christmas shopping done!
In 2012 Forbes Magazine named North Park one of America’s Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods. Afterwards, I would normally reward my bravery by heading down the street corner on the right for a nice cup of coffee at Claire de Lune, but since they have closed their doors I had to settle for Starbucks across the street.
Merry Christmas my Flickr friends!
