I guess all these people are in a hurry to get their Christmas shopping done!

In 2012 Forbes Magazine named North Park one of America’s Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods. I didn’t need Forbes Magazine to tell me that since I have been going to this San Diego neighborhood for years. My favorite Christian bookstore, camera shop and coffee lounge are located there or were. I have been patronizing those businesses for years, but now the Christian bookstore has closed down, I do all my camera shopping online and my favorite coffee lounge, Claire de Lune, has gone out of business.

Photographing North Park’s neon sign was a bit dangerous since I was standing in the middle of traffic in the narrow part of the island to capture this long exposure shot. Afterwards, I would normally reward my bravery by heading down the street corner on the right for a nice cup of coffee at Claire de Lune, but since they have closed their doors I had to settle for Starbucks across the street.

Merry Christmas my Flickr friends!

Over the last couple years I have been doing a mini-project of photographing historic neon street signs around various neighborhoods in San Diego. A couple of weeks I had dinner at Liberty Station and I noticed a new neon street sign, so of course I had to return for another evening to make a photograph.

Liberty Station is a 361-acre waterfront property located within the Point Loma community of San Diego. Its roots began in 1923 when the United States federal government opened it as the Naval Training Center. That would continued until it formally closed in 1997 and eventually the city of San Diego took ownership in 2000.

Today, Liberty Station is comprised of art galleries, locally-owned shops, trendy restaurants, entertainment, public parks and expensive single family homes.

I made this photograph as a reminder of the past, present and future of San Diego's storied history.

Surfers walking by the Imperial Beach sign and pier during a cloudy sunset.

Imperial Beach is a residential beach city in San Diego County, California. It has the distinction of being the most southwesterly city in the continental United States. If you were standing on the Imperial Beach Pier you would get a clear view of Mexico.

Before the age of the internet and online shopping, people actually went to a place of business to purchase items.

The National City Mile of Cars has been serving San Diego for more than 60 years. “The Mile” is located in National City, just south of San Diego and north of the Tijuana-Mexican Border. The mile-long stretch of National City Boulevard features 5,000 cars and 20 brands. The Mile for the longest time was the center of California's car culture.

I have driven by this sign numerous times since I live in the South Bay and always had in the back of my mind to photograph this urban neon sign. The other night as I was driving by I saw a nice sunset, but I didn't have time to head to the beach, so I pulled over and made this long exposure photograph.
