The city center of Arequipa, Peru is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is composed of baroque buildings derived from white volcanic sillar stone, giving Arequipa the nickname 'Ciudad Blanca' (White City). One evening I captured a magical sunset in the Plaza de Armas with the twin towers of the city cathedral and the ethereal El Misti volcano rising in the background.

“My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport.” — Steve McCurry

I photographed a colorful street parade at the Plaza de Armas in the colonial city of Arequipa, Peru.

To get the emotion of a place sometimes you have to get right into the action. I jumped right into the middle of the parade to capture this portrait. Apparently, the ladies love being photographed by a Canon photographer!

This is another shot of the cathedral in Arequipa, but it features more of the Plaza de Armas. This plaza is unique for a couple of reasons. One, it is pretty quiet for Latin America standards because cars are banned (no honking horns). Two, it features the largest cathedral in Peru. Three, in that cathedral is the largest organ in South America.

The city center of Arequipa, Peru is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is composed of baroque buildings derived from white volcanic sillar stone, giving Arequipa the nickname 'Ciudad Blanca' (White City). To add to the mystique of the city, it is surrounded by three impressive volcanoes (El Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu).

Happy New Year!

I met this gentleman standing in the doorway of a famous restaurant in the Barranco district of Lima (I can’t recall the name). I asked him if I could take his photo because I liked his hat. You can’t take a bad photo in Peru!
