About three hours north of Bogotá is the Spanish colonial town of Villa de Leyva. It is considered the best historically preserved and one of the most beautiful towns in Colombia.

The town’s central plaza (Plaza Mayor) is the largest in Colombia and perhaps in all of South America. With its cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings, Villa de Leyva is a photographer’s dream.

One day I was wandering around town and I found myself in Parque Nariño. I started to photograph the statue, which was the centerpiece of the park, when these school children ran into the frame. This photograph spoke to me because of the dynamic, playful interaction of the three children.

Get out and play and never grow old!

Bogotá, Colombia - August 6, 2017: Street parade for The Carnival of Bogotá which is celebrated every year for the city's anniversary.

Sunday afternoon I met up with fellow traveler, Steve, whom I met earlier in the week at the Fernweh Photography Hostel, to photograph this parade. While at the parade we ran into another traveler, Stephanie from Germany, whom we met at a walking tour the day before.

For candid street portraits I love using my Canon 17-40 wide angle lens to create dynamic, environmental portraits like this one.

Thanks guys for all your views, comments and favs!

On my trip to Colombia I experienced the transformation of a neighborhood in Medellin that was once controlled by gangs loyal to Pablo Escobar. Comuna 13 was a neighborhood notorious for paramilitary, guerrilla and gang activity. Today, the neighborhood has transformed itself where I saw kids playing on the streets, vendors selling their goods with smiles on their faces and artists freely sharing their creativity. This was all possible through the free expression of Hip-hop music and street art.

As part of a project to clean up the neighborhood, in 2011 a new project introducing outdoor escalators (escalas electricas) to the community was completed. The bright, orange escalators, as seen in the bottom portion of the frame, has made it easier for locals to navigate the hillside neighborhood and has added a splash of color to the hillside. At the top of the sixth escalator, I was able to look out onto the valley from a nice vantage point!

Barichara is Colombia's most beautiful colonial town with cobblestone streets, white-washed homes topped by red brick roofs, a charming central plaza and all surrounded by green hills and mountains.

After a very long day of travel, departing from Colombia’s other quintessential colonial town of Villa de Leyva which included connecting on three different busses, I arrived into the picturesque town of Barichara just in time to capture the “blue hour.” I quickly dropped off my bags at my hostel, grabbed my DSLR camera and tripod, and made a mad dash to the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción on the main plaza. The couple posing on the front steps was icing on the cake!

People always ask me how I am able to photograph strangers in a foreign country in which I'm not fluent in their native language.

Simple.

A smile can go a long way and works on both sides of the camera lens.
