Last month I spent a weekend in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. I left the paradise of San Diego, California for the paradise of the Hawaiian Islands. For all of you who are enduring the winter weather right now my sincere apologies.

I made this photograph as the sun was setting along Ali’i Drive along the coast of the beach town of Kailua-Kona. That building jutting out onto Kailua Bay is the Royal Kona Resort Hotel where I happen to be staying. From my lanai (Hawaiian word for patio or balcony) I scouted this location where I met this young lady. I asked her if she could strike a pose for me and so she put one hand on her face and put one leg over the other.

You got to make a photograph, not simply take it.

Thanks guys for all your views, comments and favs and for my Flickr friends in cold weather think warm thoughts!

The sun sets along Ali’i Drive on the beach town of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The steeple is of Moku’aikaua Church, the oldest church in Hawaii, built in 1837. It was my first time visiting the Big Island and it certainly will not be my last.

What is your favorite island in Hawaii?

“Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” - King David Kalakaua

Hula is a traditional form of dance developed in the Hawaiian Islands that incorporates fluid hand motions and gentle, flowing body movements. The fusion of hand and body movements tells a story of the history of the Hawaiian culture. Do not confuse it with wild shaking of the hips, which is more Tahitian in nature.

In the early 1800’s when the first Christian missionaries arrive to the islands they found the Hula dance too sexual in nature and had it banned. Many years later under King David Kalakaua (The Merry Monarch), the ancient art form was revived and expanded to include costumes, additional instruments, songs, etc. For any tourist that has seen a Hula performance while on vacation in Hawaii you can thank King Kalakaua.

Aloha my Flickr friends!

“Hawaii is paradise. It sounds cheesy to say it, but there's music in the air there.” - Bruno Mars

Paradise comes with a palace and that happens to be Hulihe’e Palace on the Big Island of Hawaii. Located along Ali’i Drive in old Kailua town, it was built in 1938 by Governor James Kuakini and subsequently use by the Hawaiian Royalty as a summer get-away. Today the palace is open to the public as a museum and is operated by the Daughter’s of Hawaii.

There’s no photography allowed inside so I had to settle for this exterior shot. I also had to stand back from the coconut trees because there was a sign warning, “Watch For Falling Coconuts.” I guess there more than music in the air in paradise!

Aloha my Flickr friends!
