Sunny days and mild, year-round weather make San Diego’s beaches a world class destination. Winter in San Diego brings clear skies (no marine layer) and is the best time to photograph landscapes and seascapes
Imperial Beach is the most southwesterly city in the continental United States and borders the country of Mexico. If you were standing on the pier looking south you would get a clear view of Mexico only a couple of miles away.
Imperial Beach is the closest beach to my house and so whenever I want to photograph some seascapes I head down to their pier. I have always photographed the pier from the north side (see the photos in the comment section), but never from the south side. So I crossed under the pier to get a different perspective.
I am glad I did.
I was able to capture the pier as it was lit up in the warm, golden light of the setting sun (when I photograph the pier from the north side at sunset it appears as a silhouette).
A lesson learned.
Sometimes the best photographic tool is simply using your legs.

“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan
I photographed these guys playing a game of basketball at sunset in Imperial Beach, California. It took me a couple of shots (thankfully not 9000) to get one of them at peak shooting action.
Usually my failures (bad shots) end up being deleted in the trashcan of my computer desktop and the successful ones end up here on Flickr.
You can fail most of the time, but all it takes is that one great shot to succeed.
That’s the beauty of photography.

This photograph is a perfect example of photographer Chase Jarvis’ philosophy of “The best camera is the one that’s with you.”
The 2 3/10-mile-long Coronado Bay Bridge connects the peninsula of Coronado with downtown San Diego. At its highest point on the bridge (210 feet above San Diego Bay) you can have a birds-eye view spanning from Point Loma to downtown San Diego to Mexico!
I was walking in Coronado on a multi-use trail that meandered under the bridge when I spotted this composition. I didn’t have my Canon full frame DSLR camera, so I reached for my handy dandy Apple iPhone 4S and composed this photograph.
Great images are around us all the time; we just need to be prepared to make them!

“Never waste any amount of time doing anything important when there is a sunset outside that you should be sitting under!”- C. JoyBell C.
Looking at the current weather reports it looks like some brutal arctic air is hitting the American Midwest. We are talking some bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures. I guess the folks back there will not be sitting outside enjoying the sunset.
I endured two winters living in Wisconsin and that was enough for me before I headed back to San Diego.
I prefer the sand to the snow.
One thing I did take away from living in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin was to never take for granted the gorgeous sunsets we have here in San Diego.
Having that warm Southern California sun on your face sure beats shoveling snow any day of the week!

A spectacular sunset from Cesar Chavez Park in Barrio Logan with a view of the Coronado Bridge.
This little park is a hidden gem of San Diego. Its concrete pier extends out into San Diego Bay, which allows some unique shots of the Coronado Bridge. To the left of the pier are various commercial tug boats and the 32nd Street Naval Base which happens to the be the largest base for United States Navy on the west coast and the homeport of the Pacific Fleet.
The park sees very little visitors and the couple of times I have been there I was the only individual standing on the pier. That night I was actually in the company of another photographer. After all, who could resist photographing a sunset like this one!
