Coronado is one of the most beautiful cities in San Diego, if not Southern California. It is home to family friendly beaches, the Hotel del Coronado and to the North Island Naval Air Station.

Although most people call it an island, it is technically a peninsular, since it is connected to Imperial Beach. Originally named by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 as the "crowned one," (Coronado is Spanish for "crowned") Coronado wears her crown as Empress of San Diego bay.

Opened in 1888, the Hotel del Coronado is listed as a National Historic Landmark and has been the choice of 14 U.S. Presidents and numerous celebrities.

The "Del," as locals commonly know it, is the largest wooden oceanside hotel on the West Coast. Its lavish Victorian architecture complete with turrets, towers, cupolas and distinctive red roof make this seaside resort a visual treat.

I setup my tripod along the shoreline ready to photograph the sunset along the beach, but the light did not look too promising. At the last minute I decided to focus on making some blue hour architectural shots of the Del.

I quickly walked back to the hotel and I climbed up to a second story balcony. Just as I was setting up my tripod the clouds lit up in a fiery blaze that was unreal.

Nature did all the work that evening. I simply stood back, pressed the shutter button and marveled at a spectacular light show.

Sunny days and mild, year-round weather make San Diego’s beaches a world class destination. Winter in San Diego brings clear skies (no marine layer) and is the best time to photograph landscapes and seascapes

Imperial Beach is the most southwesterly city in the continental United States and borders the country of Mexico. If you were standing on the pier looking south you would get a clear view of Mexico only a couple of miles away.

Imperial Beach is the closest beach to my house and so whenever I want to photograph some seascapes I head down to their pier. I have always photographed the pier from the north side (see the photos in the comment section), but never from the south side. So I crossed under the pier to get a different perspective.

I am glad I did.

I was able to capture the pier as it was lit up in the warm, golden light of the setting sun (when I photograph the pier from the north side at sunset it appears as a silhouette).

A lesson learned.

Sometimes the best photographic tool is simply using your legs.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.”
- Mark Twain

Sometimes you have to let go of the past to move onward to the future.

I took this photograph at one of my favorite places in San Diego to experience sunset. Aptly named Sunset Cliffs, it is a great place to witness the last light of the day.

As the sun has now set on 2013, I want to wish all of you a blessed 2014.

I plan to visit and photograph new destinations and perhaps some old ones in 2014.

So what are my New Year’s resolutions? I have just three.

Explore. Dream. Discover.

What are your New Year’s resolutions for 2014?

Windansea Beach in La Jolla is my favorite place in San Diego to photograph the sunset. The light is always spectacular and the rock formations make for interesting compositions.

This was one of the most amazing sunsets we had in San Diego in 2013. Photographers were shoulder to shoulder to witness this amazing light show and when we were not looking behind our viewfinder, we stared at one another and said to ourselves, “Is this for real?”

I am blessed to be living in this paradise called San Diego!

How's your New Year's resolution going so far? What are you attempting to accomplish?

“If I could lick the sunset, I’ll bet it would taste like Neapolitan ice cream.” -Jarod Kintz

While most of the country is buried under snow and facing sub-zero temperatures, it has been 70-degree weather here in San Diego, California.

Unfortunately it is going to be in the low 30’s in Cincinnati this Sunday as my San Diego Chargers play the Bengals in the AFC Wild Card Playoff game.

I hope they win. I want to celebrate their victory with ice cream.

After all, it is going to be 70 degrees here in San Diego!
