The city center of Arequipa, Peru is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is composed of baroque buildings derived from white volcanic sillar stone, giving Arequipa the nickname 'Ciudad Blanca' (White City). One evening I captured a magical sunset in the Plaza de Armas with the twin towers of the city cathedral and the ethereal El Misti volcano rising in the background.

Thanks guys for all your views, comments and favs!

If colonial architecture and cobblestone streets sound very appealing then the beautiful Spanish colonial town of San Miguel de Allende fits the bill to be your home away from home (many Americans do). San Miguel de Allende has one of the largest American communities in Mexico with over 7,000 residents. It is large enough to warrant its own U.S. consulate.

The ‘wedding cake’ towers of Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel dominates the perfectly manicured main plaza, El Jardin, in the old historic center. I spent many evenings sitting on a bench in the plaza admiring the gorgeous architecture and striking light, all the while consuming my favorite Mexican meal Tacos al Pastor!

I’m lazy.

I didn't photograph the lunar eclipse this past Saturday morning. Yes, I missed a rare celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, throwing the moon into shadow. On top of that I had the best seat in the house being here on the West Coast.

I did get up at 4:37 AM and witnessed the start of the lunar eclipse and I planned to get back out at 6:06 AM to photograph the total lunar eclipse when the moon would be engulfed in a bright red glow.

I went back to sleep.

I'll leave the lunar eclipse to Twilight movie fans and early risers. I'll take a sunset anytime.

Since returning to the West Coast and after two winters in Wisconsin, I decided to spend my time photographing sunsets at the beach. So later that day I headed down to Oceanside Pier and photographed your typical California sunset beach scene.

Surfer in the frame: check!

Pier: check!

Amazing color in the sky: check!

The next lunar eclipse to be seen in the U.S. will be on April 15, 2014. I’ll probably be sleeping in on that one too. Besides my taxes will be due on that day and Uncle Sam can be very unforgiving.

Happy Travels!

The most photographed staircase in the world! The staircase at the Vatican Museum in Vatican City, Italy.

The Bramante staircase was designed by Giuseppe Momo. They are located by the gift shop and serves as an exit for the Vatican Museum.

I am finally getting around to posting my photos from my trip to Italy last summer. We started in Rome and visited Vatican City, Florence, Naples, Sorrento and the incredible Amalfi Coast.

La Dolce Vita!

Okay...this isn’t Southeast Asia and I do not lead photo tours in that part of the world (for the moment, but I am looking to do so in the future).

This is the Bartholdi Fountain in Washington, DC that was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Does that name ring a bell? No, he did not design the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, but rather the Statue of Liberty in New York City. C’mon, who can forget that memorable ending scene from Titanic when Kate Winslet looks up at the Statue of Liberty as she starts her new life in America. American cinema at its finest (excuse me, I think I just threw up in my mouth)!

Sorry, but I have been tardy in getting back to your photostreams. The new Flickr redesign (which has slowed down the site) has made it a little troublesome to leave comments. In addition, I recently moved and my new place does not have any internet. I do use the Flickr mobile app on my iPhone, but I do not have the texting dexterity of a 15 year old and besides I have to rest my shooting index finger for photography. Finally, I have been busy...wait for it...post-processing photos! The last couple of months, due to my nomadic lifestyle, I have not had the quality time to properly process my photos with my Apple MacBook Pro and external monitor (my desktop computer is in storage somewhere in Illinois). I now have a workstation setup with my external monitor in place and the last couple of days I have been feverishly processing my photos from when I was in Southeast Asia last year (I have over 700 gigabytes of photos). So for the next couple of weeks be prepared to journey with me as I traverse through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Back to the 15 ton and 30 foot tall Bartholdi Fountain. Fatigue started to set in after photographing the memorials and monuments in Washington, DC, so I sought out lesser known sites and hidden gems around the city. The blue hour sky was not the greatest that evening as it was spoiled by overcast, rainy weather and light pollution. Perhaps it was a result of the political demagoguery pollution coming from nearby Capitol Hill!

Happy Travels!
