I spent 5 days photographing (or I should say attempting to photograph! =) ) this beautiful juvenile White-tailed Kite at Coyote Hills in Fremont, CA and hopefully will have another opportunity after the rainy weather and before it moves on. If not, I'm so grateful that I got to spend the time with it that I have and got some photos of it to remind me of my experience. Thank you to Tim and Scott for providing me with the directions to see it when I asked and to Scott for helping me find it in person! This is my first time photographing one and getting to see any raptor eat its prey that it caught. I have been wanting to photograph a Kite for some time now, so I'm grateful that this beautiful raptor was so accommodating. I watched it fly, perch, preen, take-off, land, hunt, catch and eat each of the days that I went out to see it and my photos do not do it justice whatsoever! I took these with the Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens with a 1.4 teleconverter after being advised by the camera store that it wouldn't work well with this lens, since it would be f8 and too dark, etc., but I decided to try it anyway in spite of what they told me and what I read about it not working well in low light and issues with the sharpness, etc. Even though I went out in the morning and in the late afternoon/sunset to photograph this bird, I decided to see what would happen using the teleconverter in these low light situations anyway. All of these photos were taken with the teleconverter on the lens (except for the preening shot) and I did have trouble with the focusing, sharpness, etc., but it was worth a try anyway! I will try photographing it without the teleconverter on the lens if I get another opportunity. =)
