Acorn Woodpecker with Acorn

Oaks are a rich food source for alot of different wildlife, including Acorn Woodpeckers. Both woodpeckers and squirrels (see previos photo) live in the oak community and depend on oak trees for food and shelter. Acorn Woodpeckers depend on acorns to get them through the winter. (They collect them and store them in what is called “granaries" or "acorn trees" by drilling holes in dead trees, dead branches, telephone poles, and wooden buildings). So in addition to depending on the oak trees, they depend on the pollinators as well.

This photo was taken at Briones on 05-02-11. Briones has both coastal and interior species, so the acorn could've come from a coast live oak tree, but I'm not knowledgeable about acorn identification, so I'm not sure what kind of oak tree this particular acorn came from.

Briones is near the John Muir Mount Wanda monitoring site.
