I had read reports of Green-winged Teal at a local wetland. I wanted to check them out, and ventured off with my camera.
Turns out, as least as I see it, they were Blue-winged Teal. Part of the confusion was that they were all females, and the differences are harder to make out if you can’t look from one species to the other. And they were content to patrol around, farther from the shore, and not displaying wing plumage.
But after looking at a few sites that provide key field marks, a couple of hours that seemed mostly helpful (though they pointed out how much easier it is to have the species side by side), I am pretty confident this is a Blue-winged. I am putting my trust in the very evident white patch behind the bill.
In my defençe, this is not a bird I see frequently at all. So it was fun to set up on the edge of the wetland and watch as a pair of females drifted into a swampy area and floated by me.
