The Zeiss-made 55mm f/1.8 lens sold by Sony under a joint Sony-Zeiss brand is one of the finest normal lenses available for not only the Sony E mount, but for any camera.

The world's best normal lens is undoubtedly the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4, very closely followed by the miniature Leica 50mm APO Summicron-M. I would say the Sony-Zeiss is just a hair below the $8,350 Leica APO Summicron, and clearly superior to the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens.

I like my Leica 50mm APO Summicron-M when I have time for careful manual focusing, and I am not hurried. look at the Zeiss 55/1.8 as the normal lens when I need quick autofocusing.

The rendering of the Sony-Zeiss 55/1.8 wide open is simply outstanding.

Charming house, walking through the neighborhood. Simple, but elegant landscaping.

Really cute and vibrant little house, seen while walking the neighborhood. The house radiates happiness. I had to shoot this wide open to capture the emotion more than the details!

One of the nice things about the Sony A7x (and many other mirrorless cameras) is that you can take pictures by holding the camera at various heights. The LCD back swivels out at different angles, making it possible to shoot from waist level standing up, ankle level by kneeling down, or from overhead, by holding the camera up. Very handy to look over crowds.

These bottles were surplus stock parked on top of a shelf that was like 6 feet high, so these were overhead shots. I was standing near the right corner, so I had my camera angled slightly looking leftwards, but I didn't have it pointed quite right, so the best focus ended up being on the two bottles to the left, instead of the two in the center.

Nice transition to OOF, somewhere between a 50 f/1.4 and a 50 f/2, and that is not too shabby!

At the Changi airport, Singapore. It's amazing how comfortably this scene fits with the airport and with Singapore. Anything fits in Singapore, as long as it is decent. The fire extinguisher was the one oddball item.

Sony A7R + Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 FE. This Zeiss lens for $1000 in the US is not cheap as a consumer lens, but it has incredible optics that can go toe-to-toe with pro-grade prime lenses that cost 2-3 times as much. I would say this is one of the top 3-5 normal lenses in the world, behind only the $4,000 Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 and $8,250 Leica APO Summicron 50mm f/2, and ahead of the superb Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens ($950) and the Leica 50mm Summilux and Summicron M lenses.
