Yup, that's me, 70 years ago, sitting on my top bunk while in the Marines in Hawaii, writing a letter, either to my girl or to my folks back home. Though I was a pretty poor student through high school, I started reading novels during all the dead, do-nothing time I had while in the Marines and eventually became a voracious reader. I also discovered that I loved to write, and the letters I wrote were generally at least four pages long and I wrote nearly every day (how I wish my parents had saved those lettersā¼). When I joined the Marines and became a rifle instructor and got on the Marine Corps Rifle Team and the U.S. International Rifle Team, I was enjoying my life so much, I had considered making a career out of the Marines, but with my new-found love for reading and writing, I developed a craving for more education and couldn't wait to get out of the Marines and into college. Without a doubt, Joining the Marines was the most important decision I've ever made because it woke me up to the realization that "Have Gun, Will Travel" on my resume wasn't really going to get me very far...
To get this shot, I used a mechanical 10-second screw-in self timer on my Kodak Retina II-a.

The 4/21 Macro Mondays theme is I Made This.
I molded the lead jig at the top and carved the wooden lure at the bottom from a piece of dowel.
