The narrow square just beyond the Hall of Preserving Harmony (lower center) provides the necessary buffer zone between the stately halls of the Outer Court and the more intimate palaces of the Inner Court. The Inner Court is a much denser amalgamation of quadrangles and courtyards, all of which adhere to the strict bilateral symmetry established along the central axis. Directly on the axis are a second set of three buildings set upon an 工 shape marble terrace. These Three Rear Palaces served as the official residences for the Emperor and Empress, as well as secondary venues for various state functions. Flanking the Three Rear Palaces are Six Western Palaces and Six Eastern Palaces, which were home to numerous palace consorts, eunuchs, and concubines.
