Pole fishing is an attraction for spectators in the southwest of Sri Lanka. With one hand holding on to a pole stuck in the reef, with the other holding a fishing line and hoping for a biting fish, stilt fishermen are true acrobats.
The tradition started shortly after the Second World War. At that time there were many fishermen, but not every fisherman had a stone to sit on while fishing.
