Sri Lanka
Southern coastline somewhere between Koggala and Weligama.

Pole fishing is an attraction for spectators in the southwest of Sri Lanka. With one hand holding on to a pole stuck in the reef, with the other holding a fishing line and hoping for a biting fish, stilt fishermen are true acrobats.
The tradition started shortly after the Second World War. At that time there were many fishermen, but not every fisherman had a stone to sit on while fishing. To solve this lack of space, some decided to plant iron poles, left over from the war, in the reef. Soon these iron poles also became scarce and they discovered that wooden poles offered a good alternative..
