The former abbey-church was built from 1138 to 1186 by Benedictine monks fleeing from the Normans. The Royal Château of Blois was the residence of the Counts of Blois and some French Kings. Joan of Arc went there in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to fight the English, who had conquered Orléans the previous year.
