Nathan Hale (June 6, 1755 to September 22, 1776) was born in Coventry, Connecticut. He was 14 years old when he was sent with his brother, Enoch, to Yale College. He graduated with first-class honors in 1773 at the age of 18 and became a teacher.

After the Revolutionary War began in 1775, Hale joined a Connecticut militia and was a spy for the Continental Arm. He volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission in New York City, but was captured by the British and executed.

Statues of Hale are based on idealized archetypes. No contemporaneous portraits of him have been found.

Built in 1752, it is the oldest, and only, surviving member of Old Brick Row, and the only colonial-era building remaining at Yale.
