Alongside 'The Thinker', this is one of Auguste Rodin's most famous sculptures. It commemorates an event that occurred during the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) when Calais was under siege by the English for almost a year. Calais commissioned Rodin to create the sculpture in 1884 and he completed it in 1889.
