The church was designed to represent the journey to human completion. The one who arrives at the centre of the labyrinth must transcend the ordinary self in order to realize Being. This is a point of balance symbolizing the union of the vertical and the horizontal forces.

The Knights Templar acquired the land in 1250. The forest is steeped in myths and legends. Some even claim that a great treasure is buried there.

This 15th-century chateau, probably the most famous in the Artois region, is situated in the middle of a lake. It was a major stronghold for the Artois in medieval times and testimony to the power of the Olhain family, first mentioned in the 12th century.

The existence of the castle was known in the 13th century, but the present construction is largely the work of Jean de Nielles, who married Marie d’Olhain at the end of the 15th century.
