The effigy was created by the 'Wolfskeelmeister' (Wolfskeel Master), a medieval sculptor whose real name was unknown and was later named after one of his most important works, the tomb of Bishop Otto II of Wolfskeel. The tomb was created around 1348 and is located in Würzburg Cathedral.
The 'wolf master' represented the deceased in great detail and in a surprisingly realistic manner. The figures are often portrayed in a curved posture, further enhanced by elements such as drapery.
