Ghent is a city and a municipality located in Flanders, Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province. It started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Lys and became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe in the Middle Ages. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university.

The Graslei is one of the most scenic places in Ghent's old city. The bridge to the right is the Sint-Michielsbrug.

The original castle was built around 868 by Count Baldwin I and rebuilt and expanded by Fillips of Alsasse, Count of Flanders, around 1180.
