The monastery was originally founded as an Augustinian convent, but in 1278, it was subordinated to the Dominican nuns. In the Middle Ages it was the hereditary burial place of the Counts of Zollern.

The monastery church is an early Gothic building. In 1802, the monastery was abolished in the course of secularization and assigned to the princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, whose castle is nearby. The remaining nuns were allowed to live out their lives there.

Gundi Salva Utz, the last Dominican nun in Stetten, lived alone in the monastery for 65 years. She made a living by growing herbs in the monastery garden and making herbal schnapps. The convent buildings were then used temporarily as a barracks for the Hohenzollern light house battalion. From 1869, the Franciscans took possession of the monastery for six years. It was then used as a shoe factory until the building fell victim to a major fire in 1898. Not much remains of the medieval cloister, but the north wing of the monastery with the church was spared from the flames.
