The old town hall was built in the middle of the Regnitz River in 1386 and can be accessed by two bridges. According to legend, the bishop of Bamberg would not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall, so they rammed stakes into the river to create an artificial island on which they built the town hall. The building received Baroque and Rococo touches in 1756. Anwar Johann painted the murals on the exterior walls.
