England, 1945. My dad, having stepped on a land mine in southern Holland on Dec. 6, 1944, which blinded him for 3 months and required a revolutionary (for the time) rebuilding of his foot, still bandaged here. He would lose the big toe, and require special boots for years to come, sent over from England.
