It's the dry season here in Mexico at the moment so not many dragons about! This is pretty much the first one I saw and is fairly Common in the USA and Middle America.

A Male Orthemis sp taken at the Ocean Breeze Hotel, Playa Del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico on the 25th February 2013.

Dennis Paulson has kindly looked at this one for me, which I had down as Orthemis schmidti. Here's his response:

"The Orthemis looks very much like schmidti, but I'm assuming instead it is the widespread Greater Antillean species that looks like that but that differs enough in mitochondrial DNA that I don't think it is the same. Instead, it's much more closely related to O. ferruginea and other West Indian species. The complex has had odonate taxonomists tearing out their hair for a few decades now."
