A Male Blue-tipped Red Jewel taken at the Atewa Range Forest Reserve, Ghana on the 27th November 2011.

Spent the weekend surveying Odonata (Dragonflies) with Daniel Acquah - Lamptey from Ghana (Accra) University (aka: alexandroq2000). Many thanks to him and Eric (our driver) without whom the expedition would not have been so fruitful or enjoyable!

A Fantastic Male Western Bluewing taken at the Atewa Range Forest Reserve, Ghana on the 27th November 2011.

Comes from the same "Calopterygidae" family as the European and American 'Calopteryx'. Inhabits medium to fast forest streams like Calopteryx virgo (Beautiful demoiselle) in the UK and Calopteryx maculata (Ebony Jewelwing) in the USA.

Doesn't appear to have a Common Name, so if anyone has any ideas........

A Female Red Rockdweller taken on the wall of the Aknac Hotel, Accra, Ghana on the 28th November 2011.

The Males are actually red (hence the common name), there were about 5 females and 4 Males on a 20 foot section of wall. The Females are somewhat better camouflaged!

A Fabulous Coral-Tailed Cloudwing taken at the Botanic Gardens, Accra (Ghana) on the 26th November 2011.

This species is unique in that it's the only one to have a pale blue patch in the middle of it's hind-wing, it also occurs in Asia and has numerous 'Common names' including: Twister, Coral Twister, Coral-tailed Corkscrew etc...

We where starting to loose the light by the time we reached the botanic gardens... so the photo is a bit dark!

Kindly lightened for me by Steve Covey (aka: 0dOman), thanks Steve!
