Actor John Phillip Law as Rittmeister Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.

"Real Guts... Real Glory" — There's no better words to describe the 1971 cult classic motion-picture Von Richthofen and Brown. It's truly a film made by soldiers, young and old. I say that because these individuals didn't merely playact in front of a Green Screen; they got their butts airborne over the Irish countryside, rain or shine, risking life and limb in order to make VR&B a reality.

On September 15, 1970, the filming of VR&B saw the tragic death of accomplished stunt pilot Charles Boddington, a veteran of such films as 'The Blue Max.' Then, on the next day of filming, it was only due to the heroism and physical abilities of leading actor Don Stroud that both he and pilot Lynn Garrison escaped death when their plane crashed in a river. Owing his life to Stroud, ex-Canadian Air Force pilot Garrison needed no less than sixty stitches to his head. It's nothing short of a miracle that both men survived the shoot! Stroud doesn't play a hero in VR&B... he is one — Hey, it's a heroic film!

In addition to Boddington and Garrison, prominent aviator and author Richard Bach also served as a stunt pilot on the set. He went on to write a story about it called "I Shot Down the Red Baron, and So What."

As I suggested in a previous post, I understand why this film didn't win an Academy Award... simply because nothing less than a MEDAL would be sufficient!

Without question, The Blue Max is one of the most popular and successful World War I aerial combat dramas ever made. Of its genre, it's still considered to have the largest following.

"The Blue Max," starring George Peppard as Bruno Stachel, was released by 20th Century-Fox in 1966. Based on the 1964 novel by Jack D. Hunter, the film is generally considered to be THE World War I aerial combat drama of all time. Though the 1971 cult film "Von Richthofen and Brown" by United Artists has a seemingly more fanatical following, its audience does not approach that of "The Blue Max."

Apart from being a very well cast and produced film, Peppard's co-star, James Mason, is simply brilliant as always.
