Any phalarope sighting in Britain is a red letter day, so it always surprises me to see them commonly in autumn on the west coast of America. Just a handful of Red-necked Phalaropes breed in Britain, all on Scottish islands, and they are a scarce passage migrant through the rest of Britain. They winter in flocks at sea in the tropics, usually off the continental shelves around Africa and South America. So the large numbers I saw around Monterey Bay were en route between arctic breeding grounds and tropical wintering grounds. They are relatively fearless of humans so are easy to photograph while swimming on the water but getting a close flight shot isn't easy as they are fast and small. This one whizzed past our boat while we were heading out whale watching in Monterey Bay. We also saw one or two Grey (aka Red) Phalaropes among the many Red-necked Phalaropes, but the needle-fine bill identifies this one as Red-necked.
