The Lighthouse of Ponta dos Capelinhos , is a former beacon/lighthouse located along the coastal peninsula of Ponta dos Capelinhos and Costa Nau on the island of Faial in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Constructed in the late 19th century, it is an iconic symbol on the island, for the eruption of Capelinhos volcano, which occurred in 1957-58.

The eruption at Capelinhos started on 27 September with a small boiling of water at sea some 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) west of the lighthouse. On 29 September, the intensity increased and became highly explosive. The ejecti of ash (sand and powder) reached frequently 800 metres (2,600 ft) and another time reached more than 1,200 metres (3,900 ft). The column of water vapor reached 3 or 4 kilometres (1.9 or 2.5 mi) in height and exceptionally even more. The violence of the eruption continued for a month.

CPRM - Companhia Portuguesa de Rádio Marconi was formed from the concession agreement between the Portuguese Government and Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Limited. The Statutes of the Portuguese Radio Marconi Company were published on July 18, 1925, beginning the preparatory activity of wireless communications between Portugal and the rest of the world.
A radio communications station was also built in Alfragide and another in Vendas Novas.

On December 15, 1926, the stations of Madeira and the Azores come into operation, connecting by radio communications the triangle Continente - Azores - Madeira. A few months later, it started to communicate between Lissbon Madrid, Paris and Berlin, Brazil and Portuguese colonies of Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique.

Madalena is a municipality along the western coast of the island of Pico, in the Portuguese Azores. The municipality is fronted by the stratovolcano Pico in the eastern frontier, and the Faial Channel which divides Pico from the island of Faial seven kilometers away. It is encircled almost entirely by the Atlantic Ocean except in the east, where it is bordered by São João. Opposite of Pico is the island of Faial with the famous harbour of Horta.

The 987-ha site on the volcanic island of Pico, the second largest in the Azores archipelago, consists of a remarkable pattern of spaced-out, long linear walls running inland from, and parallel to, the rocky shore. The walls were built to protect the thousands of small, contiguous, rectangular plots (currais) from wind and seawater. Evidence of this viniculture, whose origins date back to the 15th century, is manifest in the extraordinary assembly of the fields, in houses and early 19th-century manor houses, in wine-cellars, churches and ports. The extraordinarily beautiful man-made landscape of the site is the best remaining area of a once much more widespread practice.
