Digitalis purpurea, the foxglove or common foxglove, is native to and widespread throughout most of temperate Europe. It is the original source of the heart medicine digoxin (also called digitalis or digitalin). This biennial plant vegetates in the first year after sowing, before flowering and then dying in the second year. It often self-seed to produce new plants.

I see it often between growth protectors used to regenerate larger areas of forests.

A view of the Nativity altar in the south transept of the Bamberg Cathedral. The altar was made of limewood by the famous artist Veit Stoss. He made it when he was about 80 years old. His son, who was a Carmelite prior in the nearby city of Nürnberg, asked him to build it. Unfortunately he was expelled from Nuremberg because he was against the Protestants, representing the overwhelming majority of the polpulation in town at the time of the Reformation. This meant that his father was never paid for his beautiful work, which was soon moved to Bamberg.

The 'Fürstliche Thiergarten zu Regensburg" was created in 1813 as a hunting forest of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis. Today, it covers an area of 2,800 hectares and is still surrounded by a fence. It is a good place for hunting and wild boars and deer are abundant. However, lynx, wild cats, otters, beavers and black storks live there too. Thus, is is still a very lively wood and numerous plants are found in this park-like landscape.

Montferrat is part of the region of Piedmont in northern Italy. It comprises roughly the modern provinces of Alessandria and Asti. Montferrat is one of the most important wine districts of Italy. It also has a strong literary tradition, including the 18th century Asti-born poet and dramatist Vittorio Alfieri and the Alessandrian Umberto Eco.

This photo was created in the vineyards near the church of San Michele Arcangelo. It is located near the famous Abbazia Santa Maria di Vezzolano.
