The Danube Valley and large regions of Lower Bavaria are often covered by low stratus In contrast, the eastern parts of the Bavarian Forest often stick out beyond it. This day, the wind "foehn" was drying the wind above the Alps and gave rise to a fantastic view, which can be seen in the background. This image was made at the Hochstein (1134m) a spur of the mountain named Heugstatt.

As I approached this flooded area, I heard crashing and crunching sounds. It turned out that the melting ice was the cause. This area is a floodplain forest of about 250 ha in the Danube valley between Straubing and Regensburg in the territory of the municipality of Rain. It contains a 1,289 ha flora-fauna habitat and the EU bird sanctuary "Forests in the Danube Valley". It is one of 23 primeval forest relict species sites in Bavaria and is characterized by stands of old oaks and swamp forests of very high nature conservation value in the otherwise forest-poor Dungau region. From 2005 to 2012, the Landesbund für Vogelschutz in Bayern (LBV) acquired about 240 ha of forest to preserve and enhance it.

The Gäuboden is a region in Lower Bavaria that covers an area about 15 kilometers wide south of the River Danube and the Bavarian Forest, beginning opposite Wörth an der Donau and stretching as far as Künzing. The largest town in the region is Straubing, which is often called the center of the Gäuboden. The Gäuboden is one of the largest loess regions in southern Germany and thus became a center of industrialized farming. As a consequence, only few hedges or alleys survived. Now and then, one can find a chapel or a solitary tree.

This picture was made near Schierling, which is located in the valley of the "Große Laber". The name of this river most likely comes from "labara", which meant something like "the chattering, rustling" in the language of the Central European Celts.

Asparagus has been used as a vegetable owing to its distinct flavor, and in medicine due to its diuretic properties and its purported function as an aphrodisiac. It is pictured as an offering on an Egyptian frieze dating to 3000 BC. In ancient times, it was also known in Syria and in Spain. Greeks and Romans ate it fresh when in season, and dried the vegetable for use in winter. Roman Epicureans froze its sprouts high in the Alps for the Feast of Epicurus. Emperor Augustus created the "Asparagus Fleet" for hauling the vegetable, and coined the expression "faster than cooking asparagus" for quick action.

A breed of "early-season asparagus" that can be harvested two months earlier than usual was announced by a UK grower in early 2011.

In Germany, asparagus is grown in "tents" as you can see here near Geiselhöring.
