The Monarch is a species of butterfly that I've always wanted to see. A recent trip to the island of Madeira offered the chance of seeing these fabulous butterflies and I have to say they didn't disappoint. Firstly they are large and very striking to look at but for me it was their flight that was so impressive they are obviously strong fliers but it was their gliding ability that I found so fascinating to watch.

These reptiles were a common sight on the island, every wall had dozens of these living in the crevices. They varied a lot in colour but this one I thought was quite striking.

Here's another Monarch from my recent trip to Maderia. Have a great weekend all.

At around 3 inches long these are by far the largest crickets I've seen before. They were good flyers too, readily taking to the air if distuturbed.

These little butterflies were quite a common sight in Madeira, however they proved quite flighty and therefore not easy to photograph. Nevertheless this one posed nicely for me.
