After being attacked when entering the nest this male hornet crawled up onto a log where his life slowly slipped away.

The hornets were active this morning at my local nest site. I witnessed some behaviour I'd not seen before a male hornet retuned to the nest where he was immediately set upon be his nest mates the struggle continued down the tree trunk until the melee dropped to the ground and continued for a while. Eventually the male was left by his attackers, obviously injured and unable to return to the nest. Any suggestions as to why this occurred would be welcome.

The drone fly is said to mimic the honey bee, it's a common species of hoverfly. The larvae known as "red-tailed maggots" live in muddy water feeding on decaying organic matter, the adults, however, feed on nectar.

I must have walked past this hornets nest many times this summer without noticing it. It's about 2.5 metres up from the ground in a dead oak tree which is surrounded by many smaller trees. This shot shows some of the amazing outer structure of the nest, the main entrance is down and left of this position. This particular hornet seemed to be guarding these other openings. At the top you can just make out another hornet inside the chamber. This is quite a large crop as I was a couple of meters away.
